Mayor Kicks Off Walking Program as Part of Wellness Campaign

This winter, when Hamilton Township Mayor John Bencivengo suffered from a fall for several months until undergoing surgery, he was forced to wait for something more than a returning to full mobility – he also had to postpone many activities planned for his Wellness Campaign. But beginning on Wednesday evening, August 24th at 5:30 PM, Mayor Bencivengo will take the first step to begin a Walking Club as part of the “Mayor’s Wellness Campaign.”

“Not only was the pain and lack of mobility frustrating to have to deal with after my fall, but so was my inability to exercise and to kick off this walking club,” explains Mayor Bencivengo. “I am very eager to begin this walking program and invite residents who are interested in exercising, improving their health and even losing a few pounds to come out and join us!”

The walks will take place on Wednesdays at 5:30 PM at the Whitehorse-Hamilton Square Road entrance of Veterans Park and continue until weather becomes inclement in the winter. Residents of all fitness levels are welcomed to participate in walks of 1, 2 or 3 miles and should wear comfortable sneakers designed for walking. Those who wish to RSVP or check on the status of a scheduled walk due to potentially inclement weather should call (609) 890-4028.

“Walking is generally regarded by health professionals as a safe and effective way to burn calories, build muscle mass and increase flexibility of joints,” says Hamilton Township Division of Health’s Supervisor of Nursing, Annette Dillon, BSN, a Certified Nutrition and Wellness Consultant. “It is great exercise for all fitness levels.”

Other “Mayor’s Wellness Campaign” programs that will begin during the next few weeks will be announced in the coming days. Residents can learn about these programs and other wellness campaign information by visiting either the Hamilton Township website (www.HamiltonNJ.com) or the Wellness Program website (www.letsshapehamiltonnj.com).

“I urge any Hamiltonian who may be looking for the opportunity, or even the extra motivation, to begin their own journey to a healthier life to join us in our Wellness Campaign,’’ urges Mayor Bencivengo. “Together, we can increase our health and our entire community’s quality of life.''
